Admission seekers continue protest

Dhaka University, Aug 14  Medical and dental college admission seekers continued their protest on Tuesday against the government's plan to enroll students on the basis of their GPAs.
More than 300 students gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar in the morning and demonstrated. Many of their guardians also joined them.
The students are expected to hold a press conference later Tuesday at Dhaka Reporters Unity. They will also submit a memorandum to the Health Ministry, pressing for the reintroduction of the admission tests.
The protesters also said that they would stop their protest if the High Court ruling on a plea challenging the latest decision comes in their favour. The High Court is expected to hear the petition later in the day.
The government on Sunday decided, in a meeting with the officials of the Education Ministry and heads of medical colleges, to scrap admission tests for medical and dental colleges and introduce new system of enrolling students based on their GPAs from this year. Under the new system the students must have a GPA score of 8 from SSC and HSC examinations to be eligible to apply.
On Monday, medical and dental admission seekers took to the streets and staged an hour-long sit-in at the Central Shaheed Minar.
