The World Bank is still beside Bangladesh for implementation of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project, said WB Country Director Johannes Zutt on Sunday.
“The bridge can still be built. We’ll help in any way to build the bridge, though not directly,” he told a WB media briefing on “The FY14 Budget” at its office in Dhaka.
Sought comments on the country’s move to build the bridge with own resources, Zutt said the continuation of the WB financing in the country’s other development programmes can indirectly help the government implement the bridge project.
The government will continue to receive assistance from the Bank for other development projects, provided the government can ensure that some of its development activities have not changed, he said. “Indirectly, the WB financing can make a progress – this part or that,” he said.
“We continue to think that it’s (the bridge) a very important project for Bangladesh,” he added.
