Official sources told The Assam Tribune that a team of Government officials of Bangladesh are camping in Mankachar in Dhubri district to take part in the survey. On the other hand, a team of officials from India are camping in Sherpur in Bangladesh for the same purpose.
Sources said that according to an agreement between the two countries, the border pillars are maintained jointly and such kind of surveys are conducted from time to time to ensure that the border pillars are in proper condition. Sources said that whenever any border pillar is found to be damaged, it is immediately repaired. Fifty per cent of the pillars are maintained by India and the rest by Bangladesh, sources pointed out.
A lot of hue and cry is raised in the State over the visit of the delegation of the Government of Bangladesh to Mankachar as there is apprehension that the visit might be related to the land swap protocol signed between India and Bangladesh during the last visit of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to the neighbouring country. But official sources asserted that the visit is only for a survey of the border pillars and it is not connected with the land swap deal.
It may be mentioned here that if the land swap deal is ratified by the Parliament, the Boraibari area in Mankachar would go to Bangladesh. The area is under adverse possession of Bangladesh since the division of the country and in 2001, 16 personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) including an assistant commandant, were killed in that area by security personnel and people of Bangladesh.
