Jamaat’s daylong hartal observed


DHAKA: The countrywide daylong hartal, called by Jamaat-e-Islami protesting jailing and fining its 3 leaders for making derogatory remark on war trial, was observed Monday amid stay incidents of violence.
In the capital, Chhatra Shibir activists locked into clash and chase counter-chase with the law enforcers in capital’s Rayerbagh area in the early hours of hartal.
A clash erupted when police chase the Shibir activists. Police opened fire as pickets hurled few cocktails aiming them.

Shibir brought out sudden procession in Laxmibazar area.

Miscreants also exploded two cocktails in front of Shahbagh Thana.

Banglanews correspondent reports from Moulvibazar: Picketers barricaded various roads and set fire on tyres disrupting vehicular movements in the town. Later police dispersed them from the areas.

In Chapainawabganj and Joypurhat, Jamaat-Shibir activists brought out sudden processions supporting the hartal.

Besides, additional law enforcers were deployed in important points in the capital.

Earlier on Sunday, International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 fined and awarded jail to three leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami for their derogatory remarks on ongoing ICT trial and the warnings of ‘civil war.

The tribunal sentenced Jamaat Acting Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan and central Working Council member Hamidur Rahman Azad for three months imprisonment and also fined Tk 3,000 each, in default, to suffer two weeks more imprisonment.
