The journalist community and the concerned people view this threat as the violation of the law of the land.
A news story captioned ‘Kevin is selling the property of Biman in London’ was published on last Tuesday in the most popular online news portal Banglanews24.com.
As the news story was not published favoring his actions, he instantly questioned the neutrality of the news item.
He said, “No news or information will be given to Banglanews. And Banglanews will not be invited in any press conference.”
In this connection, senior journalist and columnist Ajoy Das Gupta expressed reaction saying that Kevin is violating the law of the land. If there is any irregularity, none can write against it – it cannot be.
He further said that Biman is our national organization and questions of transparency have been arising for a long time. This transparency should be increased so that none can raise question.
So the man who is working as its chief he must work with transparency. Kevin cannot cross that ethics in any way. The journalism of the land does not depend on any body’s whim, he added.
A teacher of journalism department of Dhaka University Professor Golam Rahman said that, if anybody has any objection to any news item he could have sent rejoinder. But Kevin did not. On what basis he expressed his personal grudge. This arrogance of Kevin, though, won’t impede journalism, he should not do it. He has no right to obstruct any journalist while discharging his duties.
Secretary of Dhaka Union of Journalists’ (DUJ) Shaban Mahmud said that the comments of Kevin signify his arrogance. His comments are an attempt to belittle journalism. The journalists believe in free journalism.
For the interest of investigative journalism any press man can ask any question to anybody whether he is the President or the prime Minister of the country, he added.
Shaban Mahmud demanded immediate withdrawal of this comment of Kevin. Otherwise he called upon the journalists to skip away all news conferences of Biman.
Dwelling on this matter Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) president Shahed Chowdhury said, this attitude of Kevin is acceptable in no way.
For getting information any press man has the right to go anywhere which is essential for free journalism. Government believes in the independence of journalism, but some of its subordinates do not act accordingly. Kevin is among those, he added.
He said that if in future Kevin continues his behavior like this, then the journalists would boycott his press meet.
It is to be mentioned here that in connection with the news story captioned ‘Kevin is selling a property of Biman in London’ published in Banglanews, an e-mail was sent to Kevin on Wednesday night seeking his comments on the news story.
Kevin furiously replied the mail saying, “Thanks for your mail. But I will not speak anything to Banglanews in the concerned matter. Even I will not invite your organization in any of media conference of Biman. The news quality of Banglanews is not good enough and not neutral. If you do not improve your news standard, you will not be invited in our news conference.”
Being a citizen of England which is known as the pioneer of democracy and champion of free journalism throughout the world, Kevin’s attitude is simply surprising.
In the 21st century to dictate or to give instruction to journalists is not acceptable. The journalist leaders have also raised questions whether he can behave in this way.
