TIB suggests law to prevent JS boycott

DHAKA: Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) published a research and review report on ‘Parliament Watch’, in which they suggested formulating law to prevent parliament boycott.
Executive Director of the TIB Dr Iftekharuzzaman revealed the report in a programme at BRAC center in city’s Mohakhali area on Sunday.
He said, “Boycotting parliament has become a regular phenomenon in our country, which is embarrassing for the country.”
This bad practice has started from 5th parliament and continuing still in 9th parliament. That’s why we suggested formulating law against parliament boycott.”

TIB also recommended amending the constitutional provision about the cancellation of parliament membership for absence in any session for 90 days by reducing it to 30 days.

In response to a query, Dr Iftekharuzzaman said, “We are against the partisan or alliance boycott. There is no scope of boycotting parliament in democracy.”

In the seventh parliament, the BNP was absent from Jatiya Sangsad sessions for 163 days out of 382 working days. In the fifth parliament, the then main opposition AL skipped 135 days out of the 400 sittings.
