AL does not steal votes

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also president of ruling Awami League (AL), said her party has no intention to steal votes, it rather ensured people’s right to vote which had been violated by the opposition BNP.

Urging opposition leader Khaleda Zia, she also said, “Please come back to the path of democracy as the next polls will be held in the way the other countries of the world follow.”

The premier came up with the observation while addressing a view-exchange meeting with grassroots leaders of Rangpur district unit at Ganobhaban on Saturday morning.

Sheikha Hasina said, “There is no need of the caretaker government as all the elections held under the present government… the recently held four city corporation polls were also staged in a free, fair, neutral and peaceful manner.”

The Premier said: “The politicians, teachers, students, businessmen--none could escape the torture and repression of the past caretaker government.”

“The past caretaker government clung to power for two years instead of three months. Is there any guarantee that the next caretaker government would hold polls in time? Rather the caretaker government could stay in power till dooms day,” she observed.
