The government has allotted Tk 30 million to
Dhaka (South) City Corporation for repair of infrastructures in Dhaka’s
Motijheel and Paltan that were damaged in the mayhem unleashed by
Hifazat-e Islam last month.
Local Government Minister Syed
Ashraful Islam on Sunday informed Parliament about the allocation while replying
to a query from reserved women seat MP Sadhana Halder.
The
Chittagong-based organisation of Quami madrasas held a rally in the city's
commercial hub Motijheel on May 5 following its high-voltage 'Dhaka siege'
programme to press home the 13-point charter of demands.
The law
enforcers in a pre-dawn raid dispersed the protesters the following
day.
In the morning of that day, the areas between Motijheel and Paltan
were found to be in a mess with trees on the road dividers uprooted, smokes
coming out from scores of vehicles and shops and signs of outraged
vandalism.
According to Syed Ashraf’s estimate, the Hifazat activists cut
down 1,255 trees in Bijoy Nagar, Paltan and Motijheel.
He said they also
damaged eight traffic signals and electrical poles.
