Terming Saturday’s elections to four city corporations free and fair, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina identified it as “victory of democracy and the government”.
“We proved that election under a political government can be held in a free and fair manner,” Hasina, who heads the ruling Awami League, said at the Jatiya Sangsad Sunday afternoon.
Stating the Election Commission is now enjoying full freedom, she thanked the commission for conducting the city polls perfectly.

The BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance candidates won mayoral polls in all four city corporations — Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet.
“BNP-backed candidates won in all four city corporations as the government didn’t interfere in the elections. But still the opposition is demanding restoration of the unconstitutional caretaker government system,” Hasina said.
Mentioning that her politics is for the people of the country, she said, “We will not come back to power if the people don’t give their mandates in the next general election,” the premier said.
“We don’t have the aim to occupy the power by vote rigging. And we hate the illegal means of grabbing power,” she added.
