A
vehicle bears marks of damage as Jamaat-Shibir activists set fire to it
in the capital's Bijoynagar area on Saturday afternoon.
The
activists of Jamaat-Shibir and other partners of the BNP-led 18-party
alliance set fire to two vehicles and vandalised two more and exploded
several cocktails in the capital Saturday on the eve of the opposition's
countrywide road blockade.Fire service officials said a bus of Provati-Banasree Paribahan was torched around 6:00pm at Malibagh.
Earlier in the day, the Jamaat-Shibir men set fire to a private car and vandalised two more at the capital's Bijoynagar.
The driver of the car sustained injuries while he was trying to come out of his vehicle on blaze.
The incident occurred between 1:00pm to 1:30pm, witnesses said.
The activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir suddenly emerged from three alleyways and torched the private car and smashed another private car and a microbus, the witnesses said.
Shah Alam, officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station, earlier confirmed that the Jamaat-Shibir men smashed a vehicle in Bijoynagar and they left the scene when law enforcers chased them.
Omar Faruk, officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Police Station, told The Daily Star that opposition activists riding motorbikes exploded several cocktails in Farmgate and Karwan Bazar areas late in the afternoon.
The BNP led 18-party alliance on November 29 declared a countrywide road blockade for December 9 to press home its demands including restoration of the caretaker government system.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urged the people on Friday to keep their vehicles off the roads during the eight-hour countrywide road blockade.
