Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami set fire to a tyre on the Farmgate-Shahbagh road at Karwan Bazar Monday afternoon a day ahead of their countrywide hartal.
Shortly before 7:00pm, the pro-hartal activists set fire to three tyres on the Farmgate-Shahbagh road at Karwan Bazar, creating panic among the commuters and locals in the area, witnesses said.
Following the incident, a readymade garments factory and other business establishments were shut in the area.
The witnesses added that three to four youths aged between 25 and 26 blasted the cocktails and set the tyres on fire.
Earlier around 5:50pm, the Jamaat-Shibir activists vandalised a bus at Jatrabari crossing in the city.
Police said a group of 40 to 50 Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a sudden procession in the area and vandalised the bus and torched two tyres, Gazi Mozammel Hossain, deputy commissioner (Wari Division), told The Daily Star.
The law enforcers dispersed the processionists and picked three of them up, official said.
Meanwhile, police arrested at least 20 Jamaat-Shibir activists in different areas at the city's Paltan on charge of creating anarchy, Golam Sarwar, officer-in-charge of Paltan Police Station, told The Daily Star.
Apart from the capital, the leaders and activists of Jamaat and Shibir also brought out processions and clashed with police at different parts of the country on Monday.
In Dinajpur, traffic movement with Dinajpur and other districts came to a halt as Jamaat-Shibir men clashed with police in the evening in Ranirbandar area under Chirirbandar upazila.
The clash left at least 15 people including an upazila level Jamaat leader injured, reports our Dinajpur correspondent.
Police fired at least 15 tear shells and 10 rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the activists, police said.
Chirirbandar police said the clash ensued when police intercepted a procession brought out by Jamaat and Shibir men at Ranirbandar Bazaar near Dinajpur-Dhaka highway around 6:15pm.
In response, the activists pelted brickbats at the police, said Md Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Chirirbandar Police Station.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has declared a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for Tuesday demanding cancellation of what they termed 'farcical trial in the name of war crimes trial' and release of detained party high-ups.
Shafiqur Rahman, acting secretary general of Jamaat, in a press release said the party called the hartal demanding withdrawal of 'false' cases against party high-ups and their release from detention.
Their demands also include restoration of the caretaker government system and control of the skyrocketing prices of essentials, the press release said.
