Lawyers protest changes to bar council act

Bangladesh Bar Council authorities on Saturday demanded immediate cancellation of the bar council's law amendment ordinance.
The lawyers across the country will hold meetings at all the bar premises in protest against the ordinance, Vice-Chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council Khandaker Mahbub Hossain said at a press conference at the council.
The government on October 21 issued the ordinance titled as of Legal Practitioners and Bar Council (Amendment) Act, 2012.
The cabinet on October 16 approved the draft stripping bar council of its power to enroll law practitioners.
As per the amendment, a five-member enrolment committee will be formed with an Appellate Division judge, two HC judges, attorney general and an elected member of the council.
Before the ordinance was issued, a three-member committee of the bar council took decision about new enrolment.
Mahbub said the amendment has illegally curtailed the power of elected committee of the bar council.
If the government does not cancel the ordinance its consequence will be very bad, he said.
The amendment has made the government empowered to interfere the functions of the bar council, which is absent in any country including India and Pakistan, he said.
Mahbub urged the parliament members not to approve the ordinance for passing a bill in this regard.
