'DNA profiling could be done in country'

Monday, September 3, 2012 The DNA tests of the samples and evidences collected from the bodies of slain journalist couple Sagar-Runi could have been done in the country's forensic lab, a technical adviser of the lab claimed on Monday.
"But no one contacted us for the forensic test of samples and evidences collected from the bodies of Sagar-Runi," said Prof Sharif Akhteruzzaman, technical adviser to the National Forensic DNA Profiling Lab of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
He was addressing a press conference at the seminar room of the laboratory.
Sagar Sarowar, news editor of Maasranga television, and Meherun Runi, a senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were killed in the early hours of February 11 at their apartment in the capital's West Rajabazar. Their only child Megh was in the house then.
In two phases -- on June 12 and July 17, Rab sent some evidence to two US laboratories for forensic test and DNA profiling.
A vested quarter's propaganda, which said that the forensic test was not possible in this laboratory, was baseless, Akhteruzzaman said on Monday.
The laboratory has so far carried out forensic test of 6,481 samples successfully against 1,832 cases since its inception in 2006, he added.
