Qaisar denied bail

A tribunal in Dhaka, dealing with the war crimes cases, rejected the bail petition of Syed Mohammad Qaisar, a leader of the Peace Committee in Habiganj, on Wednesday.
International Crimes Tribunal-2 led by Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order after a hearing on Qaisar’s bail petition.

The three-member tribunal asked the jail authorities to arrange treatment for Qaisar, former state minister for agriculture of military dictator HM Ersahd’s cabinet.
During the hearing, defence said the tribunal should grant Qaisar’s bail considering his physical condition and old age ailment.
The prosecution however told the tribunal that Qaisar should be kept behind the bar as a number of witnesses against him already lodged general diaries against him saying that he issued threats to them.
The prosecution also submitted documents before the tribunal in this regard.
The 73-year-old war crimes suspect was arrested and sent to jail on Tuesday immediately after getting discharge from the city’s Apollo Hospitals. He was under police surveillance at the hospital since May 16 after the tribunal issued arrest warrant against him.
