Join Parliament, PM to opposition

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has once again urged the opposition BNP to join the Parliament and place their demands about how to conduct the forthcoming national election.
The invitation comes on Saturday, two days after the 18-Party alliance which the BNP leads, asked for talks to accept a caretaker administration.
“Attend Parliament and say what you want,” Hasina said in a meeting with ruling Awami League’s Kishoreganj district unit.
The opposition has been staying away from the Parliament demanding restoration of the now annulled caretaker provision.

BNP chief Khaleda Zia has turned down the Prime Minister’s offer for dialogue saying the government must first accept their demand and blamed the government for intransigence.

Various personalities and institutions, worried over the current logjam, have pushed for a government-opposition dialogue to end the stand-off over the nature of the election-time arrangement.

Ever since the constitutional provision of a non-partisan caretaker government was scrapped in 2011, the opposition has been on the streets claiming elections under a party-led body will not be ‘free and fair’.

On May 2, Hasina asked Leader of the Opposition Khaleda for the dialogue.

Later, Khaleda urged the government to restore caretaker government system first.

But Hasina was firm in her party’s stance saying it will never be restored because it was made up 'non-elected people'.

She has however said she is open to proposals for a multi-party election management committee with elected lawmakers of all parties including those from opposition to oversee the polls.

The BNP-led opposition has enforced general strikes on many occasions to put pressure on the government on the caretaker issue.

Senior BNP Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman, in his first public meeting in five years in London last week, urged the expatriates to keep up the pressure on the government.

The opposition has called for a shutdown for Sunday for which the HSC and equivalent examinations have been rescheduled to May 30.
