They also claimed that the building collapses from Spectrum garments in 2005 to recent Rana Plaza were happened due to “foundation failure”.
The roundtable meeting was jointly organized by ‘Mukta Akash’, Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh and Institution of Architects, Bangladesh at the Institution of Engineers in the city on Saturday.
They also said RAJUK should form a Building Regulatory Authority to enforce the rules and regulations to construct buildings.
President of Biswa Sahitya Kendra Dr Abdullah Abu Sayeed presided over the roundtable meeting.
Addressing the programme, the educator said, “The government is like a round stone and we must push it to move forward.”
He said, “So many buildings hastily built in the last 30 years should have taken more time.”
Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed also proposed to form a committee to face the situation, including regulations of construction.
Professor Zamilur Reza Chowdhury was elected as convener of the committee. They proposed RAJUK chief engineer to be a member of the committee.
Addressing the Zamilur Reza Chowdhury said, “RAJUK has to divide duties to three groups. One group will look after Detailed Area Plan (DAP) and another will regulate the construction of buildings and the last group will work to develop.”
Besides, he emphasized on increasing the work force of RAJUK.
RAJUK Chairman Engineer Nurul Huda said, “The qualified persons are leaving the country.”
Lawmaker Fazlul Azim said, “All the incidents like collapse of Rana Plaza are taking place due to lack of implementation of laws.” “This is why we have to form social movements,” he said.
He further opined that Fire Service sector should be taken under the Disaster Management Ministry.
