Mahasen kills 11 in 3 districts

BHOLA: At least 11 people were reportedly killed in Barguna, Patuakhali and Bhola districts as the cyclonic storm hit coastal areas of the country on Thursday morning.

The deceased were identified as Syed Ali, 75, Abir, 6, Chan Mia, 65, Anwar Hossain, 60, Mosharraf, 57 and Nadira, 26, of Barguna and Kashem, 65, Rafiqul Islam, 65, and Parvez Pal, 5, of Bhola district, and Siraj Akanda, 60, and Rizia Parvin of Patuakhali district.

They died due to tree fall on way to the shelter centers of the areas, said spot accounts of the incidents.

Confirming the matter to banglanews, deputy director of cyclone preparation M Hafizuddin Ahmed told banglanews that the cyclone was moving toward Cox’s Bazar with 100 to 120km wind speed.

Earlier in the day, cyclone ‘Mahasen’ hit Khepupara of Patuakhali district around 8:00am Thursday with wind speed 80-100 kph, says Bangladesh met office.

Mentioning heavy rainfall were recorded in the areas, he added that 232 mm rain lashed Khepupara, 122mm Patuakhali, 95mm Barisal, 78mm Bhola, 75mm Feni, 54mm Hatia, 37mm Chittagong and 17mm Cox’s Bazar.

In the recent development, Meteorological Department withdrew the danger signal in the coastal areas as Cyclone Mahasen weakened on Thursday afternoon after rolling over some districts.
