BD political heatwave Mozena tries to cool it down

DHAKA: US ambassador to Dhaka Dan W Mozena is going to Washington for few days.

Before that Mozena is passing busy time in meeting, sitting, entertaining the ever feuding belligerent Bangladeshi politicians to bring them under one umbrella of reaching an understanding on the upcoming general election.

Mozena wants to go to Washington with a clear message on some important issues. Various sources indicated that Mozena at present seriously dealing with the issues of signing of Trade and Investment Cooperation Framework Agreement (TICFA), restoration of GSP and his exercise for stabilizing the internal politics of this country.

As Mozena sat with the secretaries of the government on TICFA issue, similarly he sat with the politicians to hover over the political crises of the country.

Arranging at least two Iftar parties at his own residence, he had created opportunities for the politicians suffering from mistrust for holding open discussion so that the political cloud engulfing the country goes away quickly.

It is learnt that Mozena is going to Washington on next Saturday to discuss the Bangladesh’s GSP problem. After three days hectic program there he will return Dhaka.

It is learnt that on last Tuesday and Thursday discussions among the political hobnobs held at the residence of Mozena on some serious burning subjects like present political situation, political crises and find out ways and means to overcome it came up for discussion.

The political men gathered in the ‘get- together’ there expressed this gathering could help overcoming the crises.

In two Iftar parties held at Mozena’s residence Jatiyo party chairman HM Ershad, LGRD Minister and General secretary of Awami League Syed Ashraful Islam, Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu, BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Dr Moyeen Khan, Jamaat leader Barrister Abdur Razzak, BNP MP Shahiduddin Choudhury Anny were present.

Political analysts have welcomed this exercise of Mozena at this critical juncture of Bangladesh politics.

Former ambassador Humayun Kabir said on this scenario, ‘It is matter of welcome that the friends want to help us but the core decider is our own intention.’

He said that we should come forward and we should give more importance on it. However the well wishes of the friends will help us in taking decision.

On the other hand the cabinet of Bangladesh has given approval to TICFA much earlier. The discussion on TICFA was stalled due to hot debate on withdrawal of GSP. After it the TICFA signing got priority.

Mozena held meetings with the foreign secretary, labour secretary and commerce secretary on Monday and Wednesday on TICFA and GSP issues.

It is learnt that both Bangladesh and USA have reached to a final stage of signing the TICFA. The papers relating to TICFA along with the cabinet approval have been sent to Washington. Both Mozena and our foreign secretary hinted to the journalists that TICFA might be signed within weeks.

Mozena informed that the TICFA approval copies in Bangla and English versions have been sent to Washington. So after securitization of the copies there will be no bar to ink the agreement.

Bangladesh is working to get back the GSP facilities. USA is also sincere in this matter. USA state department, labour department and US business communities have jointly given a work plan to Bangladesh to get back GSP.

Mozena held meetings with Bangladesh government to know the progress of implementation of that work plan.

After the meeting Mozena informed hearing in this regard will be held in December in Washington in the matter of reinstatement of GSP.

He further informed that discussions on the progress and implementing the work plan were held in the meetings with the secretaries.
