BD getting GSP status back

DHAKA: Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Mohammad Faruk Khan expressed hope that United States would revive the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) facilities for Bangladesh by next six months.
The minister came up with the expectation while addressing a roundtable titled ‘Garment Industry: Potentiality, Problem and Solution’.
Shippers Council of Bangladesh organized the programme at Daily Star Bhaban at Farmgate in the city on Sunday.
Faruk Khan said, “We are negotiating with Europe and United States of America. Hopefully the GSP facilities will be reinstated in America in the next six months.”

He added: “Through GSP suspension, the US did not help us. We worried about recent industrial accidents.”

The ruling Awami League lawmaker also said, “The government has worked for the development of the Garments sector in the last four years.”

He also said, “The compliance in the factories is better than ever. Meanwhile, labor law has been passed by cabinet. Hopefully the law will be passed in next JS session.”

Urging all for coming forward to save the garments industry, BGMEA President Atikul Islam said, “GSP had been suspended for conspiracy. Every factory must have an exit plan.”

All concerned groups, including Bangladesh Bank, transportation, and insurance should come forward to protect the sector. “The sector has a Tk 29,000 crore contribution in Bangladesh economy. So, all have to behave responsibly to protect the industry,” he said.

The roundtable meeting was attended, among others, by Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) senior research fellow Dr Nazneen Ahmed, BGMEA former president Salam Murshedi and Dhaka University Professor MM Akash.
