Rana Plaza owner’s father detained

Police detained Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana’s father Abdul Khalek from the capital Dhaka on Monday in connection with two cases filed over the high-rise collapse.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Masudur Rahman informed bdnews24.com about the detention.
He said Khalek was detained from the city’s Moghbazar on Monday noon.
“He (Khalek) is being taken to the Detective Police headquarters,” Rahman said.
Rana’s father has been named in the two cases filed after the building caved in on Wednesday killing over 380 people.

The news of Khalik’s detention was announced at Savar Bus Stand quoting State Minister for local government Jahangir Kabir Nanak.

Rana Plaza, allegedly constructed violating building norms, housed five readymade garments factories.

Over 1,000 others are still missing since the accident. They are feared trapped under the pile of concrete and metal.

Sohel Rana, leader of a pro-government front, was arrested on Sunday from Jessore, a district along the border with India’s West Bengal.

At a press briefing, RAB claimed the nine-storey building owner was responsible for the deaths. Rana had allegedly forced the factory owners to continue working on Wednesday ignoring cracks spotted the day before.

However, Rana refuted the allegations and claimed the factory owners had ‘pressurised’ him.

Apart from Rana, the law keepers have also detained four owners of the five garments factories located in the ill-fated building.
