HC convicts colleague of RU Prof murder

The High Court has upheld death sentence for Dr Miah Mohiuddin and another after finding them guilty of murdering Rajshahi University Professor Dr S Taher Ahmed.


Ahmed taught geology and mining at the university.

Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo pronounced this verdict on Sunday after five days of hearing.

Besides Mohiuddin, Taher Ahmed's house caretaker Md Jahangir Alam has also been given death sentence. They had received a similar sentence in the trial court.

Two others implicated with the murder, Abdus Salam and Nazmul, have been given life sentence instead of death by the High Court.Taher Ahmad’s body was recovered from sewerage near his residence two days after he had disappeared on Feb 1, 2006.
His son Sanjid Ahmed Alvi filed a case with Motihaar police. The chargesheet submitted on Mar 28, 2007 by investigation officer Ahsanul Kabir, then a Sub-Inspector for Detective Branch of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, accused six people of his murder.
Miah Mohiuddin, an instructor at the University’s geology department, Mambubul Alam Salehi, the then President of Islami Chhatra Shibir’s RU unit, caretaker of the victim’s residence Jahangir Alam were implicated along with his brother Abdus Salam, a Shibir activist. Their father Ajimuddin was also accused along with a relative named ‘Nazmul’.
Jahangir, Nazmul and Salam testified in court saying Miah Mohiuddin was the one who persuaded them to kill Taher by luring them with the promise of money, computers and university jobs.
