Amar Desh publication halted

DHAKA: The authorities of the Bengali Daily Amar Desh declared closure of its publication temporarily as the government sealed press of the newspaper.
Executive editor of the newspaper Syed Abdal Ahmed made the announcement in a press conference at the National Press Club on Monday afternoon.
The press conference was attended, among others, by cultural editor Hasan Hafiz and news editor Jahed Chowdhury.
On Sunday, a Dhaka court sent 19 press staff of Bengali Daily Amar Desh to jail after rejecting their remand and bail petitions in a case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Shamsul Arefin passed the order when police produced them before the court with a seven-day remand plea for each of them.

Officer-in-Charge of Ramna Thana Shah Alam told banglanews that a case was filed against them with the thana on Saturday night for violating printing and publication act.

Earlier in the night, law enforcement agency members held them driving at Al Falah Printing Press at Moghbazar and seized some 6000 copies of the newspaper.

Apart from this, police filed case against editor-publisher of Daily Sangram Abul Asad and Acting Chairman of Amar Desh Publication Mahmuda Begum, mother of Mahmudur Rahman.

As per the court order, Detective Branch (DB) police raided at the Daily Amar Desh printing press and sealed it off on April 11.

Earlier on the day, DB Police personnel arrested Daily Amar Desh acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman from his Karwanbazar office.
