An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed and 15 including five policemen were injured when law enforcers opened fire after being attacked by Jamaat-Shibir men in Dumuria upazila of Khulna Thursday morning.
The deceased, Mansur Ali Gazi, 40, son of Khan Jahan Ali Gazi of Chechuri village in the upazila, was a driver of a human hauler, reports our Khulna correspondent.
The clash ensued when police tried to disperse Jamaat-Shibir men, who blockaded a road at Dhamalia of the village by burning tyres and logs around 8:30am, said Abdul Kader Beg, additional superintendent of police in Khulna.
Resisted by police, around 250 activists of Jamaat and Shibir chased the team to a local police camp and also hurled several homemade bombs targeting the cops, the additional SP said.
After attacking the police camp, the Jamaat-Shibir men also attacked Chechuri High School as the policemen took shelter to the school.
The law enforcers opened fire to defend themselves and the panicking school students, said the additional SP.
Mansur was shot and died on the spot while at least 15 people personnel including five policemen were also injured, he added.
Jamaat-Shibir men later brought out a procession with the body.
Of the injured policemen, four were rushed to local police lines hospital while another to Khulna Medical College and Hospital, the additional SP said.
Police fired total 93 rounds of bullets and Shibir blasted 25 to 30 cocktails during the one-hour clash, he said.
Monir Hossain Liton, assistant publicity secretary of Jamaat city unit, claimed that 10 of his party men sustained bullet injuries during the clash. Three were stated to be critical, he said.
