`VC resigns first, then probe`

Dhaka, July 12 Protesting teachers and students at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology have rejected the syndicate's offer of a judicial probe against the Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellor।
On Thursday, the second day of their protests against the VC and pro-VC, teachers, students and employees of the university assembled in front of the BUET administrative building.

"Employees of BUET have joined the teachers and students demanding the resignation of the VC and pro-VC," Teachers Association General Secretary Professor Ashraful Islam said. "At this point there is no need for a judicial probe."

"Even if there is to be a probe, it will be done after they step down. The probe decision was taken by the VC and pro-VC," he added.

Teachers Association President Mujibur Rahman announced on Wednesday that the protesters had decided to stage sit-in at 9am every day until VC SM Nazrul Islam and Pro VC M Habibur Rahman resigned.

The association also demanded resumption of all activities at the university.

Later that day as many as 24 teachers, including chairmen of 16 departments and deans of five faculties resigned from their administrative posts.

Faced with the protests the VC told reporters he had no authority to resign and could only do so if the president wanted.

The university authorities announced closure of BUET on Tuesday night one month in advance on the occasion of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr as the agitating teachers continued their movement demanding removal of the VC and the pro-VC.

The university authorities came up with the decision ahead of Jul 14, the day agitating teachers had fixed for announcing their fresh agitation programme.

According to the Academic Calendar of the university, the vacation was supposed to begin from Aug 11. A huge contingent of Police was deployed after the vacation was announced.

The teachers' association observed work abstention programme from Apr 7 to May 5 until they postponed the programme for a month following Prime Minister's request to withdraw their agitation. The Prime Minister had assured them of meeting their demand.

The teachers had been observing work abstention for an hour starting 11am every day since July 7 as their demand was not met even after the Prime Minister's assurance.
