Train derails in Gazipur, 1 dead

Dhaka, July 13 A Khulna-bound train derailed at Gazipur's Dhirashram, snapping rail connection between Dhaka and the northwest and Mymensingh on Friday.

An unknown man has died and at least 20 others were injured when the engine and two of the 13 compartments of the Sunbdarbans Express derailed at around 9:30am, Jaydevpur Rail Junction Master Ziauddin Sarker told bdnews24.com.

What caused accident was not immediately determined, he said.

"The engine fell on its side and two compartments went off the tracks. Also, some tracks have disassembled," he said.

He added a Gazipur Fire Service team led by Deputy Assistant Director Akhteruzzaman Liton was working on recovering the body of the unidentified man.

"At least five trains from Dhaka, headed to Mymensingh and the northwest, are stuck at different stations," he said.

Bangladesh Railways Assistant Engineer Wajir Ahmed Majumder said a relief train from Dhaka has already left for the spot and the communications would be revived as soon as possible.

Railways and Communications Minister Obaidul Quader visited the location.
