Emotionally charged people descended on the Central Shaheed Minar in droves after the ambulance carrying the dead body of the deceased writer reached there around 10:22am from the airport.
A sea of humanity waited patiently around the Shaheed Minar from 8am to have a last glimpse of the legend.
Humayun's children from his first marriage, Nova, Shila and Nuhash, the writer's two brothers Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and Ahsan Habib, two sisters and Zafar's wife Yasmin Haque stood by his coffin.
The writer's mother Ayesha Foyez and wife Meher Afroz Shaon arrived there minutes later.
Humayun's friend journalist Saleh Chowdhury and writer Syed Shamsul Haque were also seen standing by his coffin.
The President's Military Secretary Major General Fakhruddin Ahmed was the first to place floral wreath on the writer's coffin followed by Prime Minister's Special Assistant (Media) Mahbubul Haque Shakil and her Assistant Personal Secretary Saifuzzaman Shikhor.
Sajeda compared Humayun's contribution to the Bengali literature with that of Rabindranath Tagore, Sharat Chandra Chattopadhya and Shamsur Rahman.
She said the writer had inspired Bangladesh's young generation to read books. "He also had unparalleled contribution to the country's drama and cinema."

Food Minister Abdur Razzaque said the writer contributed a great deal to Bangladesh's literature, cinema, plays and other arenas and his death was an irreparable loss to Bangladesh.
Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said the nation will remember his contribution.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the government was considering including several of the writer's works in the syllabus in schools and colleges.
BNP's Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and several other leaders of the party paid respects.
Five private television stations, apart from state-run Bangladesh Television, are telecasting the proceedings programme live from the Central Shaheed Minar.
Two condolence books were also opened at the Shaheed Minar where the writer's body will be kept until 2pm.
A Namaz-e-Janaza will be held at the National Eidgah at 2:30pm before Humayun's body will be kept at BIRDEM's mortuary.
