Dhaka, July 20 Contemporary Bengali writer Sunil Gangapadhyaya of the the erstwhile Indian state of West Bengal has expressed shock at the death of Humayun Ahmed.
In a reaction to BBC Bangla on Thursday the Kolkata-based writer said: "Humayun had surpassed Sharatchandra in popularity."
"Though he was younger than me, I was impressed with his humour, intelligence and knowledge. I have read many of his works," he said.
The two writers, both originally from this side — eastern part of undivided Bengal, which went on to become Bangladesh — of Bengal, became close friends despite their age difference. Sunil has also visited Humayun's retreat, Nuhash Palli in Gazipur.
The writer from Pashchimbanga said 'there were just a few' who could infuse such humour into their writing.
In reply to a question by BBC Bangla, Sunil said, "I would give Humayun a rather high place in Bengali literature. I hope that future readers and researchers evaluate him properly."
