Dhaka, July 18 Rajesh Khanna, popularly known as the 'first superstar' of Bollywood, died on Wednesday after suffering from cancer, reports Indian television channel NDTV.
He died at his Mumbai residence a day after he was released from hospital on July 17. He was 69.
According to NDTV, Khanna was suffering from cancer and had been taken to Lilavati Hospital to be treated for exhaustion, and spent there until Monday.
The actor had been ill for some time and was in and out of hospital in recent weeks.
His bungalow, Aashirwad, on Carter Road in Bandra has been cordoned off by the police, added the report NDTV posted on its website. He will be cremated on Thursday morning.
Khanna made his name playing the romantic lead in a string of films which were massive hits in the 1960s and 1970s and he starred in more than 160 films, including hits such as Kati Patang, Aaradhana, Anand and Amar Prem.
Khanna won three Filmfare awards in his long career. Rajesh Khanna also held a Lok Sabha seat as a Congressman from 19992-1996.
The last time he appeared before his fans was on June 21, when Khanna was said to have stopped eating, drawing a huge crowd of fans around his residence.
He was later reported to be "more than fine" by son-in-law, actor Akshay Kumar and Khanna himself appeared on his balcony, visibly weak and wearing dark glasses, to wave at his fans and give them the victory sign, reported NDTV.
Rajesh Khanna had also been hospitalized for a few days in April this year.
His ex-wife, actress Dimple Kapadia, has nursed him through his illness. They have two daughters together - Twinkle, who is expecting her second child with husband Akshay Kumar, and Rinkel, who is married to businessman Sameer Saran.
