“Some of the European buyers have expressed concern after the killing of garment union leader Aminul Islam,” said William Hanna, ambassador and head of delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh.
Speaking at an orientation session on “Lisbon Treaty and Changes in EU Diplomacy” at Hotel Ruposhi Bangla in the city, the ambassador in reply to a questions expressed disappointment over the Padma Bridge issue, called for further improvement of human rights situation and holding the next general election in a free, fair manner.
He termed the cancellation of Padma Bridge fund by the World Bank “very unfortunate”. “The bridge is really essential for the people of Bangladesh,” he added.
The ambassador informed that the EU has no scope to involve with the Padma Bridge project as the EU has no involvement in any infrastructure construction project in Bangladesh.
Asked how he evaluates the situation since the cancellation of the loan agreement, he reiterated that “this is unfortunate”.
Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) organised the event with support from EU. DCAB President Rezaul Karim Lotus and General Secretary Bashir Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.
In reply to another question about incidences of disappearance, the EU envoy said the European Union will continue to express concern over the disappearance of BNP leader Ilias Ali and his driver and subsequent killing of RMG union leader Aminul Islam.
He reiterated impartial investigation into the killing and disappearance incidents and bringing the persons involved with those into justice.
