Dhaka, Kathmandu to produce power

Dhaka, Jul 31 Bangladesh and Nepal will work together under sub-regional framework to produce power for mutual benefit, the Foreign Secretary said on Tuesday.
Dhaka has already nominated members for a working group for hydropower and Kathmandu will do the same at the earliest to conduct a study, said Mohamed Mijarul Quayes after holding official talks with his Nepalese counterpart Durga Prasad Bhattarai in Dhaka.
The secretaries discussed political relations, trade, investment, connectivity, people-to-people contact and tourism.
"Water is flowing and the earlier we can take advantage of power it can generate the better it will be," Quayes said.
When asked about hydropower project on Saptokoshi River in Nepal, Quayes said it would not be appropriate for the secretaries to talk only about a single project.
Connectivity
Both the officials discussed connectivity issues and use of Bangladeshi ports for Nepalese trade.
"We have been able to put in place some sub-regional mechanism and the latest is the addendum to the protocol on railway between Bangladesh and India and alternative route of access to Nepal through Rohanpur-Sinbad," the Secretary said.
Bhattarai said Nepal had asked for permission to use Bangladeshi ports .
Regular FOC
The secretaries signed a memorandum of understanding to hold regular Foreign Office Consultation.
Bhattarai said it would provide a good platform to discuss entire gamut of bilateral and regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest.
Quayes said the Foreign Office Consultation would help to identify new areas of cooperation in the bilateral and multilateral context.
He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will issue a separate statement on port-entry visa for the Nepalese.
