Ensure safety of religious establishments: HC

Dhaka, Oct 3 The High Court on Wednesday ordered authorities to ensure safety of all the religious establishments – mosques, churches, pagodas and temples – in the wake of recent communal attacks in Buddhist localities and temples in Cox's Bazar and Chittagong.
The bench of justices Mirza Hussain Haider and Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order on a plea by Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, a resident of Cox's Bazar's Ramu upazila.
The court also questioned the 'inaction' of the local administration.
The Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police, Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Cox's Bazar district and the Officer-in-Charge of Ramu Police Station have been asked to reply to the rule within two weeks.
The High Court bench has also ordered the probe committee, formed by government to investigate Ramu carnage, to submit its report to the court within Oct 17.
Religious fanatics, apparently stirred by a Facebook post allegedly defaming the Holy Qur'an, had attacked a Buddhist locality in Ramu on Saturday night. At least seven Buddhist monasteries, 30 houses and shops were smashed, torched and looted during the overnight frenzy.
The string of violence continued the following day as similar attacks took place in Chittagong's Patia, Cox's Bazar's Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas.
The local residents have alleged that the atrocities could have been avoided if the local administration and the police had not 'neglected' their duty. Ramu Police Station's Officer-in-Charge Nazibul Islam has been withdrawn amid the accusations.
