PM denounces caretaker demand

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday took a swipe on people who echoed BNP chief Khaleda Zia's demand for restoration of the caretaker government.

"Several high flying people have lent their voices to her (Khaleda) demand... People who do not get votes and cannot maintain a political party after formation only talk tall," Sheikh Hasina said at a views exchange meeting at her official residence Ganabhaban.

The prime minister also denounced the opposition demand to revive the caretaker government system.

BNP chief Khaleda Zia has set June 10 deadline to restore caretaker system in the constitution to oversee next parliamentary polls due in January 2014. Several smaller parties including Bikalpadhara led by ex-president Bodruddoza Chowdhry, Gonoforum led by Kamal Hossain and LDP led by Oli Ahmed, had talked in favour of caretaker system in a dialogue with President Mohammad Zillur Rahman over election commission.

"Our statement is clear. No untoward incident occurred in any of the polls held under the Awami League-led government. People voted freely in a peaceful manner," she said defending her government's stance on the interim government system.

"We've ensured the people's right during our past three years that they can vote anyone they wish," the prime minister said.

Hasina, also the Awami League chief, said her party never came to the state power by vote rigging.

She was exchanging views with the grass root level leaders of the Lalmonirhat district Awami League.
