BNP Organising Secretary (Sylhet Division) M Ilias Ali went missing Tuesday night.
Banani police found his car abandoned in front of a park in Banani near his house around 12:00 midnight. But neither Ali nor his driver, Ansar (full name could not be learnt immediately) could be traced till Wednesday afternoon.
Khandker Lutful Kabir, deputy commissioner of Gulshan Division, told The Daily Star that police found the private car near the park with all the doors wide open.
Police also found a mobile phone set from inside the car, he added.
When they dialled a number from the call list of the mobile, Ali’s family members picked up the phone and confirmed that the car belonged to Ilias Ali.
Quoting Ali’s wife Tahmina Rushdi, the police officer said Ali went out of his residence at Banani Chairmanbari in the city along with his private car around 10:30am.
Driver Ansar was driving the car, she told police.
Ali’s wife could not contact with him after midnight, the DC said.
Tahmina lodged a general diary with the Banani Police Station early Wednesday.
Hearing the news, BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and others party leaders and activists visited Ali’s house in the morning.
Blaming the government for Ali’s disappearance, Fakhrul said the BNP will go for tougher agitation programmes if Ali is not found immediately.
