Railways minister’s Assistant Personal Secretary Omar Faruq was sacked and Bangladesh Railway General Manager (East) Yusuf Ali Mridha and Divisional Commandant Enamul Huq were suspended on Sunday in connection with huge stashes of money seized from their car.
The recruitment process under the ministry has been postponed for indefinite period, Railways Minister Suranjit Sengupta announced at a press conference.
Six days into the seizure of Tk 70 lakh from the car of Omar Faruq that was allegedly heading towards Suranjit’s house, the ministry urged the Bangladesh Bank on Sunday to freeze all assets of the APS.
Judicial cases will be filed against the trio under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules 1985, Suranjit said during the press conference organised at the Rail Bhaban in the city.
Over the past few days, Suranjit was critical about suggestions that the money was being taken to his house and his ministry formed two separate committees on Wednesday to probe the incident.
Asked during Sunday’s press conference about the basis of sacking his APS, the minister said he took the decision himself.
“I have the power to sack my APS.”
Regarding the two Railway officials, he said the ministry suspended the two on the basis of their statements.
The railway ministry will hand over the related documents and APS’ statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission, Suranjit said, adding that Bangladesh Railway will extend all sorts of cooperation to the ACC to run a neutral probe.
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized Tk 70 lakh from the car of Suranjit’s APS Omar Faruq Talukder on April 9 night. Apart from Faruq, Yusuf Ali Mridha and Enamul Huq were also in the car which was going to the minister’s residence, according to them.
Driver Ali Azam of Faruq's car drove the vehicle into the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters at Pilkhana in the capital around 11:30pm Monday and hollered that there were stashes of bribe money in the vehicle.
It has been learnt that there was Tk 70 lakh inside the car, though Omar Faruq estimated it at Tk 25-30 lakh. On Wednesday, Faruq deposited Tk 70 lakh to his account through Dhanmondi branch of Mercantile Bank.
Azam, the driver of APS Omar, drove the vehicle carrying the APS and two other officials to gate-4 at Jhigatola after they refused to give him Tk 5 lakh as a share of the money, the sources said.
The detainees were released at around 1:00pm on Tuesday.
Asked to comment on the demand of his resignation, Suranjit said on Sunday that he would comply with directives from those who tasked him with leading the ministry।
