No ground yet to quiz Suranjit: ACC

Dhaka, Apr 17 The anti-graft body chief said on Tuesday that investigators have not found anything yet to question Suranjit Sengupta over his family wealth.

A report by a Bengali daily on Tuesday suggested that Anti-Corruption Commission could quiz the former railway minister over family assets and his son's businesses.

Reacting to the report, ACC chairman Golam Rahman told bdnews24.com: "Investigators will decide on this. But so far the investigators have not found any link of the former minister with the cash scandal."

"However," he said, "we are investigating the matter with due importance."

Asked about the report by the Bengali daily Prothom Alo, the ACC chief said, "Journalists may have their own agenda ... and they ask questions from that angle. The director general has probably been misquoted."

Quoting ACC director general (prevention) M H Salauddin, Prothom Alo reported that Suranjit Sengupta could also be interrogated about the telecom business of his son or other family businesses, if required.

Salauddin, however, told bdnews24.com: "I didn't say anything like that."

After two separate investigations ordered by the railways ministry, the ACC on Apr 12 also launched an investigation into the seizure of unaccounted-for cash from a car carrying an aide of the minister and two senior railway officials.

ACC deputy director Mohammad Abu Sayeed and assistant director Rashedur Reza have been assigned the task to complete the investigation 'as soon as possible', Golam Rahman had said.

Following widespread criticism over the scandal, Suranjit resigned on Monday taking blame for the incident but protesting his innocence.

A day before, his assistant personal secretary Omar Faruq Talukder was fired, and general manager of Railway Division (East) Yusuf Ali Mridha and Dhaka railway police commandant Enamul Haque were put under suspension.

Border Guard Bangladesh personnel had seized Tk 7 million cash from a car carrying Suranjit's APS and the two railway officials in the early hours of April 10.

Media reports said the money was taken as bribe for making appointments in the ministry.
