Muhith sees lack of info on power

Dhaka, Apr 15 minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith believes confusions are there about information on the power generation and demand.

He said an informative report over the power sector's situation on the whole will be presented in parliament in the next budget to clear all misgivings.

Muhith declared the move before sitting with secretaries to all ministries regarding the next fiscal's (2012-13) budget at NEC Auditorium at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Sunday morning.

At the start of his speech, the finance minister enquired whether the power and energy secretaries were present. "Are you there?" he asked.

"There is a frightening lack of actual data on power. So we [the government] will present a report on the overall state of affairs in the new budget," he announced.

The report will include specific details of how many tenders were called in 2009, how many power stations have come on stream, how many are out of production, Muhith added.

Despite the government's claim that power production has been hiked by 3,000 MW, rolling outages are a regular feature to ease sufferings of residents and businesses because of blackouts.

Government departments claim that even though the daily production has gone over 5,500 MW, the demand is nearly 7,000 MW.

Muhith said the budget will include detailed breakdown of the income and expenditure of at least one district.
