UN thinks that major portion of BNP leaders want to vie in election while party’s Chairperson Khaleda Zia and some others leaders took intransigent position against election.
On the other hand, the government also thinks that they would win in the upcoming election. At the same time, incumbent Awami League-led 14-party government has a strong commitment to hold free and fair election whether they win or lose. And United Nations has faith in the government’s position.
A reliable source in UN said that UN is giving emphasize on dialogue as it can avoid political violence and that’s why UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon talked with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia over phone on Friday.
The source also added Ban Ki-Moon wanted to talk with only opposition leader in first phase, but in order to maintain balance; he called both leaders over phone to hold dialogue.
Earlier on May, UN Assistant Secretary General Oscar Fernandez Taranco submitted a report to UN after visiting Bangladesh. The report gave UN a clear concept on the position of government and opposition party.
Taranco in his several meetings clearly said that there is no obstacle to hold election in due times as both parties think they will win.
Quoting Taranco’s speech, the source again said that though BNP Chairperson and some leaders took hard position on the demand of restoring caretaker government, but a major portion of BNP want to join election or even they are ready to leave their party as they think there is chance winning in the election.
According to Taranco’s report source said its clear that government wants to hold a free and fair election. Holding a transparent and expectable election, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wants to prove that it is only possible under her leadership.
In this circumstance, United Nations believes that there won’t be any vote rigging during Awami League government whether the result is.
But UN has not suggests whether the election should be hold under caretaker or partisan government.
United Nations wants that the main two parties should reach in consensus through a dialogue and next government will be formed through a timely election.
Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN in New York Dr AK Abdul Momen told banglanews, “Visiting Bangladesh UN assistant secretary General Fernandez opined that a fair election can be hold under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina.”
Abdul Monem said, “UN does not want to discourage election under any elected government. Elections in other countries are being hold in this system as it is a democratic. UN officially never will take position against such type of election.
