Appeal for contempt rule ICT order on HRW Sep 2

DHAKA: International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-1) fixed September 2 for pronouncing the order on contempt charge against Human Rights Watch (HRW) for making comment over verdict and war crimes trial against Ghulam Azam.

The three-member ICT led-by ATM Fazle Kabir on Thursday fixed the date after hearing arguments on contempt rule sought against the New York-based rights organisation.

Chief state prosecutor Ghulam Arif Tipu, prosecutors Tureen Afroz, Jeyad Al Malum, Sultan Mahmud Simon and Pronab Kanti Bol moved for the petition.

Earlier on Tuesday, a team of state prosecutor comprised with Tureen Afroz, Jeyad Al Malum, Sultan Mahmud Simon and Pronab Bol submitted the charges to registrar of ICT-1.

Prosecution also sought a prohibition on publicity of the HRW’s statements about the tribunal activities in its petition.

It urged the tribunal to take legal action against HRW through foreign ministry for its statement posted in its website about the tribunal activities.

Human Rights Watch directorial body (350, 5th avenue-34th floor, New York, US) organization’s Asian region director Brad Adams (100. Bush Street, Suite 925, San Francisco, US) associate of Asian division of HRW Storm Tiv (1630, Connectivity Avenue, NW, Washington DC, US) were made accused in the allegation.

On August 16, Human Rights Watch, one of the world’s leading independent organizations dedicated to defending and protecting human rights, has published a report saying that: “The trial of Ghulam Azam, the former chief of Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islaami (Jamaat) party, at Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal was deeply flawed and did not meet international fair trial standards.”
