Egyptian prosecutor orders Mubarak release

DHAKA: An Egyptian prosecutor has ordered a Cairo prison to release deposed president Hosni Mubarak, an official said on Thursday.

The official in the prosecutor’s office said written instructions had been sent to Tora prison to release Mubarak, who was toppled in a revolt in 2011.

Deposed Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak will be put under house arrest, the prime minister’s office said on Wednesday.

Mubarak, who was toppled in a 2011 uprising, is expected to be released from a Cairo prison on Thursday.

‘In the context of the emergency law, the deputy military commander issued an order that Mohamed Hosni Mubarak should be put under house arrest,’ read a statement from the office, reports The Voice of Russia.

The EU foreign ministers agreed Wednesday to restrict exports of security equipment and arms to Egypt in response to the mounting violence but opted to maintain economic assistance.

EU foreign ministers condemned the bloodshed after emergency talks in response to the deaths of almost 1,000 people in a week of unrelenting violence.

‘It’s very important that there is a political roadmap,’ said EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, adding that it had to be put ‘not only on the table but actually into action’.

Several EU ministers agreed that Egypt should not receive weapons deliveries given the current situation, but it was unclear whether they would agree to a ban.

Countries including Germany, France, the Netherlands and Britain have all suspended exports.
