Jail Killing Case SC upholds death penalty of Hashem, Marfat


DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld the death penalty of two fugitives Dafadar Marfat Ali and Dafadar Abdul Hashem Mridha in the much-talked-about jail killing case.

A 6-member Appellate Division Bench led by Chief Justice M Mozammel Hossain passed the order on Tuesday morning.

The court also dismissed the High Court verdict which upheld the death penalty of fugitive Risaldar Muslemuddin and life imprisonment of seven others and acquitted two others who were earlier handed capital punishment.

Primark, Loblaw to compensate Savar victims

DHAKA: Two Western retailers have pledged to compensate families of garment workers killed while making their clothes in a Savar factory building that collapsed April 24.

The promise from Britain`s Primark and Canada`s Loblaw came after the owner of the collapsed Rana Plaza was brought before a court on Monday.

Rana, 4 garment owners produced before HC

DHAKA: Owners of Rana Plaza and five RMG factories were produced before the High court on Tuesday morning as per its order.

The owners are Sohel Rana, owner of the collapsed building--Rana Plaza, Baslus Samad Adnan, owner of New Web Bottoms and Mahmudur Rahman Tapos, owner of New Web Style, M Aminul Islam, owner of Phantom Apparels of Rana Plaza and Md Anisur Rahman, owner of Ether Textile Limited.

The five owners were taken to the court around 9:00am and were produced before the HC bench comprising Justice Mirza Hossain Hyder and Justice Muhammad khurshid Alam Sarkar around 10:20am.

Workers’ clash injures 30 in Savar

SAVAR, DHAKA: At least 30 people were injured during a clash between garments workers in Savar on Tuesday morning.
Witnesses said that hundreds of agitated workers started staging protest on Dhaka-Aricha highway and some 500 workers vandalized factory of Al-Muslim group.
At one stage, workers of Al-Muslim group locked into clash with agitated workers, leaving 30 people injured.

DHAKA: The latest tragedy in the country once again raises the issue of the high price of cheap clothing, and puts pressure on the world`s largest retailers to take meaningful action.
Last week, nearly 400 people were killed in nine-story Rana Plaza where more than 600 people still remain unaccounted for.
The collapse occurred a day after cracks appeared in the structure of the building. Despite the danger, garment workers were told to join work.

EC notifies polls for 4 city corporations

The Election Commission on Monday announced schedules for corporation elections in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet.


As per the announcement, polls to these corporations will be held on June 15.

Nomination papers can be filed until May 12 and scrutiny will take place on May 15-16, while May 26 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations, according to the schedule.

Rana Plaza owner’s father detained

Police detained Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana’s father Abdul Khalek from the capital Dhaka on Monday in connection with two cases filed over the high-rise collapse.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Masudur Rahman informed bdnews24.com about the detention.
He said Khalek was detained from the city’s Moghbazar on Monday noon.
“He (Khalek) is being taken to the Detective Police headquarters,” Rahman said.
Rana’s father has been named in the two cases filed after the building caved in on Wednesday killing over 380 people.

Japanese nursing delegation in Dhaka

A nursing delegation from Japan led by President of University of Kochi Dr Hiroko Minami is visiting Dhaka to discuss ways to develop nursing sector in Bangladesh.

According to Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) during her six-day stay in the capital Minami would also explore possibilities of JICA’s future cooperation in health sector particularly in nursing.
The delegation is expected to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Health Minister AFM Ruhal Haque.

Historic win for Tigers

Bangladesh won their first ever Test on Zimbabwe soil securing a 143-run victory in the second and final Test after lunch on the fifth day at the Harare Sports Club on Monday.

Shakib Al Hasan wrapped up the match by trapping Kyle Jarvis leg before wicket for seven. Hamilton Masakadza remained unbeaten on 111. The pair delayed the inevitable with a 38-run stand that took the hosts to 257 all out.
The result means the tourists shared the two-match series. Bangladesh, who scored 391 all out in their first innings, lost the first Test by 335 runs on the fourth day at the same venue last week.
Victory for Bangladesh was the second against their opponents in seven Tests. The previous six Tests had resulted in five wins for the home side and a draw.

A Dhaka Court has granted police 15 days to quiz Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana in two cases filed over the high-rise collapse in Savar.

The court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Wasim Sheikh also granted the law keepers 12 days to quiz Ethertex Limited Chairman Anisur Rahman in the same cases.
Nine-storied Rana Plaza caved in on Wednesday killing over 380 people. The building housed five readymade garment factories, including Ethertex Limited.

Govt nods RMG safety panel formation

Taking a cue from the worst-ever industrial disaster in Bangladesh, the government has decided to form a high-level committee to scrutinise safety measures in readymade garment factories across the country.

Monday’s regular Cabinet meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister, also decided to update the existing building code with specifications for the authorities concerned to approve building designs, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told reporters after the meeting.A State Minister will head the committee, with representations from various ministries, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and various workers' organisations.

Rana at RAB headquarters

Mohammad Sohel Rana, the owner of multi-storey commercial block Rana Plaza which collapsed on Wednesday morning, has been brought to RAB headquarters at the capital’s Uttara.
He was presented before the media there while RAB officials briefed the reporters about his arrest on Sunday.
After his capture in Jessore earlier in the day, Rana was flown to old airport in Tejgaon by a helicopter at around 5pm.
Then he was driven to the elite force’s headquarters in a microbus.
Rana, whose ‘negligence’ allegedly caused the high-rise to collapse in Savar, leaving nearly 400 people dead, was arrested at Benapole earlier in the day.

BNP blames govt for tragedy

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Sunday held government responsible for ‘failing to save’ the lives of garment workers trapped under the debris of Rana Plaza.
He made the observation while participating at a human-chain protest programme on Sunday.
“There is a humanitarian crisis because the government failed to take measures after the crack appeared in Rana Plaza. There are hundreds of workers under the rubble who are fighting to stay alive. Hundreds of corpses are buried inside,” the BNP leader said.

Ban-Ki Moon mourns Savar deaths

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed his grief at the loss of lives and injuries caused by the collapse of a nine-storey building in Savar on the outskirts of Dhaka.

“He extends his sincere condolences to the Government and people of Bangladesh,” his spokesperson said in a statement issued on Sunday.

“He expresses his deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones or have been otherwise affected by this tragedy.”

Efforts on to save those alive in Rana Plaza

Relentless efforts are on to salvage those still alive inside the rubble of the collapsed Rana Plaza on Sunday morning, 96 hours after the tragedy struck in what was being described as the worst such incident in the history of Bangladesh.

Nine people were found breathing under the rubble at the third-floor of the collapsed building, army said at a press conference in the morning. Five of them could be rescued around 12:30pm, bdnews24.com reporter at the scene reported. Apart from these nine, the rescuers also noticed another sign of life under the debris.

As heavy rain poured down from Saturday noon, it cast doubts over further rescue of people trapped inside the ill-fated nine-storey Rana Plaza. But rescuers surprisingly managed to bring out one more survivor from the deepest part of the wreckage.
“There are a number of people still alive at the third floor of the wreckage,” said volunteer rescuer Miraz who, along with other rescuers brought out a woman alive around 1:00pm.
“I have talked to them standing close to a tunnel that took us to a broken pillar. They gathered on the other side of the pillar. When I talked to them, they called my name and said that they don’t want to come out. I don’t know what’s wrong,” Miraz said.

The death toll from the Savar building collapse rose to 340 as rescue workers recovered 25 more bodies from beneath the rubble of the nine-storey building on Saturday.
At least 19 people were pulled out of the rubble alive on Saturday. So far, total 2,425 people were rescued from the debris.

Angry over the deaths in Savar building collapse, hundreds of garment workers staged demonstration and blockaded a road in the city’s Mirpur Saturday morning.
The workers gathered at Mirpur-10 roundabout around 8:30am and kept the intersection blockaded for half an hour.

Left parties call countrywide daylong hartal for May 2

 
Left parties have called a countrywide daylong hartal (shutdown) for May 2 to press home their 10-point demand including arrest of the owners of Rana Plaza and five readymade garments (RMG) factories housed in it.
Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) and Gonotantrik Bam Morcha called the hartal, Manjurul Ahsan Khan, president of CPB, told The Daily Star on Saturday.

Death toll rises to 153

Savar Building Collapse

SAVAR, DHAKA: At least 153 garments workers have been found dead and more than 1000 others injured as an 8-storied building--Rana Plaza--collapsed in Savar bus stand area of Dhaka on Wednesday morning.
The rescue team identified some 108 bodies and handed over to family and relatives to 8:41am on Thursday.
Death toll may rise as many others were trapped in the collapsed building.
Police and hospital sources confirmed the matter to banglanews.
Army, RAB, police, fire service personnel and locals were conducting rescue mission. There were few garments and shops in the building.

Building & 5 garments owners sued


SAVAR, DHAKA: Building and five garments owners were sued over the incident of Rana Plaza collapse at Savar.
Two cases were filed against them in Savar police station early Thursday, police sources said.
Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) filed a case against the owner of the building under the building construction act while Savar thana police filed the another one against owners of the building and five garments for killing people.

The government has announced a national mourning for Thursday in memory of the victims of the Savar building collapse, the Cabinet Secretary says.Md Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said the national flag will fly half-mast.
At least 80 people have been killed and over 800 injured as the multi-storied Rana Plaza caved in at Savar early Wednesday.
Rescue efforts are underway.
He said special prayers will be held at places of worship for the dead.
In Parliament, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also announced the national mourning. But, she said public offices will operate normally as it is not a holiday.

Savar deaths hurtle towards 100

Zahidur Rahman, Director, Public Relations of the Enam Medical College and Hospital, where the bodies and the injured were taken, told bdnews24.com they had received 91 bodies until 4:30pm.
bdnews24.com correspondents in Savar said the bodies have been kept wrapped in plastic sheets in the mortuary. Relatives have taken away many bodies.
Law-enforcing agencies have been grappling to maintain order in the hospital as hundreds of people including relatives of those missing gathered there.
The Rana Plaza that housed four garments, a bank, and commercial shops including electronics, computer, cosmetics and clothes, collapsed in the morning hour after garment workers were ‘forced’ to join work.
