Jabed Ali stands up to prove EC’s backbone ok

DHAKA: Election Commissioner Brig Gen (Rtd) Jabed Ali claimed backbone of the Election Commission is alright.

Standing up from chair Jabed Ali said, “See my backbone is still alright. I am the oldest person of the commission and I am fit. So you understand backbone of every commissioner is fine.”

He came up with the observation while talking to journalists at commission’s secretariat on Wednesday in response to opposition BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s recent remarks about the backbone of the commission.

Jabed Ali also said commission will perform its duty as per constitution. Political party need not worry as it is committed to hold free, fair and impartial elections.

ইজতেমা মাঠ অথবা পূর্বাচলে সমাবেশ করতে পারে বিএনপি : ডিএমপি

মাসুদ আলম : মঙ্গলবার (৬ ডিসেম্বর) দুপুরে নিজ কার্যালয়ে ডিএমপির ডিসি (মিডিয়া) মো. ফারুক হোসেন বলেন, ঢাকা মহানগর পুলিশের পক্ষ থেকে আমরা রাস্তার ওপর জনসমাবেশ করার অনুমতি দেব না। আমরা সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানে সমাবেশ করার যে অনুমতি দিয়েছি, তা এখনও বহাল আছে।   আগামী ১০ ডিসেম্বর টঙ্গী বিশ্ব ইজতেমার মাঠ অথবা পূর্বাচলে আন্তর্জাতিক বাণিজ্য মেলার মাঠে বিএনপি সমাবেশ করতে চাইলে ডিএমপির কোনো আপত্তি থাকবে না। তিনি আরও বলেন, আগামী ১০ ডিসেম্বর সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানে অনুমতি দেওয়া হয়েছে। অনুমতি দেওয়ার পরেও ডিএমপি কমিশনারের সঙ্গে তারা দেখা করে বিকল্প ভেন্যুর প্রস্তাব নিয়ে এসেছিলেন। বিএনপির পক্ষ থেকে আরামবাগে বিকল্প ভেন্যুর জন্য মতিঝিল বিভাগের ডিসির কাছে প্রস্তাব দেওয়া হয়। প্রস্তাবটি আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে ডিএমপি কমিশনারের কাছে আসেনি। ডিসি আরও বলেন, তবে ঢাকা মহানগর পুলিশের পক্ষ থেকে এখন পর্যন্ত বিকল্প ভেন্যুর কোনো চিন্তা করা হয়নি। কোনো রাস্তার ওপরে ডিএমপি অনুমতি দেবে না। বিএনপির সমাবেশকে কেন্দ্র করে আইনশৃঙ্খলা পরিস্থিতি রক্ষায় যে ধরনের কার্যক্রম নেওয়া দরকার ডিএমপি তা নিয়েছে বলেও উল্লেখ করেন পুলিশের এই কর্মকর্তা। সোহরাওয়

Jamaat blasts cocktails, vandalise bus in city

23 held at Jatrabari, Paltan   Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami set fire to a tyre on the Farmgate-Shahbagh road at Karwan Bazar Monday afternoon a day ahead of their countrywide hartal.  Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir blasted at least seven cocktails at the city's Karwan Bazar Monday afternoon a day ahead of their countrywide hartal. Shortly before 7:00pm, the pro-hartal activists set fire to three tyres on the Farmgate-Shahbagh road at Karwan Bazar, creating panic among the commuters and locals in the area, witnesses said. Following the incident, a readymade garments factory and other business establishments were shut in the area. The witnesses added that three to four youths aged between 25 and 26 blasted the cocktails and set the tyres on fire.
