AG says No provision of reviewing verdict

FROM THE SUPREME COURT: Attorney General Mahbub-e-Alam categorically said that there is no provision of reviewing the verdict issued by the appellate division of Supreme Court that sentenced Quader Mollah to death.
In a post-verdict reaction, Mahbub-e-Alam at his office on Tuesday said, “The apex court has granted our appeal filed against inadequate sentencing by ICT. This is the final verdict. There has no provision to review the verdict.”

In a reply to a question whether the convicted could appeal for reviewing the verdict under the section 105 of the Constitution, the Attorney General said, “Those who were, according to the 47(A) section, involved with genocide and mass atrocities are not allowed to get the benefit of section 105.”

In another question of what will be the post-verdict procedure, Mahbub-e-Alam answered, “Now the copy of full verdict will be sent to the Tribunal; Tribunal will sent the copy to the jail authority; then the jail authority will execute the sentence.”

But Quader Mollah will get the chance of seeking mercy from the president, he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, the appellate division of the Supreme Court sentenced Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah to death for his involvement in crimes against humanity during liberation war in 1971.

The five-member bench of the Apex Court led-by chief justice Md Mozammel Hossain passed the verdict at 9:37am after concluding the hearing on appeals filed against inadequate sentencing and conviction of war criminal and Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah.

The others justices are Surendra Kumar Sinha, Abdul Wahab Mia, Syed Mahmud Hossain and AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury.
