GP to introduce 3G in October

DHAKA: Country’s largest mobile phone operator GrameenPhone (GP) has planned to introduce Third Generation (3G) services from October in Dhaka and Chittagong.
GrameenPhone Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Vivek Sood made the disclosure in a press conference at a city hotel on Monday.
Vivek Sood said: “GP will start 3G services in Dhaka and Chittagong in October, in Gazipur and Narayanganj in November and within December it will cover 3G networks across the country.”

GP CEO again said, “3G service is a new milestone for GrameenPhone and Bangladesh. GP is working to reach information technology to root level.”

Allude to the auction for the much-awaited auction of 3G, Third Generation mobile-phone services was held in the city on Sunday with participation of four mobile phone operators.

These operators are GrameenPhone, Robi, Banglalink and Airtel.

A total of 25 MHz of spectrum auctioned for five blocks.

Of them GrameenPhone bought 10 MHz with base price of US$ 20 million for each MHz. The validity period for a 3G license will be for 15 years.

The 3G service provides high speed wireless internet and allows mobile users to use their smart phones for TV viewing and holding video conferences, services previously unavailable.
