Rizvi to stay in jail: court

Dhaka, May 3 (bdnews24.com) – A Dhaka magistrate court on Thursday sent the BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi to jail rejecting both bail and remand petitions.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan made the order after hearing the remand plea by Shahbagh police seeking 10 days to grill Rizvi.

The court also refused Rizvi bail.

The order says if sub-inspector of Shahbagh Police Station Biplob Kumar Shil, the investigation officer of the case, wants he can interrogate the accused at the jail gate within three days.

Police detained Rizvi on Apr 30 over two cases filed for his alleged role in the bombs explosion at the Secretariat and torching vehicles in front of the prime minister's office during the opposition-enforced countrywide lockdown on Sunday.

Shahbagh and Tejgaon police filed two separate cases later on Sunday.

On Monday, police produced Rizvi in the court of the metropolitan magistrate and appealed for a 10-day remand in the bomb explosion case and another five-day remand in the arson case.

Rizvi's lawyers pleaded for his bail. After initial hearing, the court had fixed Thursday for hearing the two pleas.

The newly formed BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance had enforced two daylong countrywide shutdowns this week demanding the government 'return' missing leader M Ilias Ali. Two crude bombs exploded at the Secretariat on the first day of the lockdown.

The same night, sub inspector of Shahbagh Police Station Hirendranath Pramanik filed a case accusing BNP's acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 27 others.

Rizvi's name was third in the accused list.

Another case was filed with the Tejgaon police on Sunday in the arson case accusing Rizvi and 43 others.

The BNP has been claiming these cases as 'false'.

BNP had enforced three consecutive days of countrywide general strike last week over the same demand.

Ilias Ali, One of BNP's organising secretaries and a former MP, along with his car driver went missing since early Apr 18. His car was found abandoned at an alley in the capital's Mohakhali area near his residence.
