Polls under AL govt: PM

Dhaka, May26 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reiterated that the next elections would be held under her government despite opposition demand for revival of caretaker system to oversee the parliamentary polls scheduled for January 2014.

"Elections so far held under this government were free, fair and impartial. So this government would be able to hold national elections in that manner," Sheikh Hasina said on Saturday while exchanging views with leaders of the party's Meherpur unit at Ganabhaban, PM's official residence in the capital.

She mentioned that 5,175 elections were held since her government took office in January 2009 and she claimed those were free, fair and impartial.

Hasina said, "The Election Commission is independent and it will work impartially. The administration, including the law enforcing agencies, will be under the Election Commission during the polls. There will be no interference by the government."

The government annulled the caretaker government system through the 15th amendment of the Constitution last year. In line with the amended Constitution, the incumbent government will oversee the next parliament election.

However, the opposition parties, led by BNP, have been protesting against the repeal of the system and said elections would not be fair if not held under non-partisan caretaker administration.

Rejecting the opposition's demand to reinstate the caretaker system, she said, "The caretaker government sent her [Khaleda Zia] two sons abroad after giving them a good beating. How could she forget the caretaker government of 1/11, did she forget the repression and torture during its term?"

"One set of caretakers went, another set came. They didn't even want to hold the election and they forced us to jail," Hasina said pointing to the military-backed caretaker government.

She said all the ways to grab power illegally has been plugged though the amendment of the Constitution, "Many games have been played with the fate of the people. We don't want this to continue."

"People will try those who would grab power violating the Constitution," she added.
