Ex-Rab commander held for robbery


The former commanding officer of Rab-7 was arrested at Moghbazar in the capital early Thursday for his alleged link with a Tk 2.07 crore robbery from a Chittagong shrine in November last year.

Arrestee Lieutenant Colonel (sacked) Zulfiqar Ali Majumder was the commanding officer of Rab-7 when the amount was looted from a shrine at Talsara village of Anwara upazila in Chittagong on November 4 last year.

Later, a robbery case was filed with Anwara Police Station against 10 Rab men, two of their informants.

On April 30, Zulfiqar was sacked for his alleged involvement with the robbery.

Following his removal, Zulfiqar who was at the institute of Army Training and Doctrine Command in Mymensingh then went into hiding.

Describing the raid, Inspector Abdus Samad of Anwara Police Station told The Daily Star that acting on a tip-off they along with a team of Ramna police raided a house at Doctor alley in Moghbazar around 3:30am and arrested the Rab official.

Zulfiqar was at the custody of Ramna police when this report was filed at 10:30am and he will be brought back to Anwara Police Station in Chittagong as the robbery case was filed there, Abdus Samad said.

During his stay at Ramna Police Station, Zulfiqar talked to the media.

He said, "I was Lt Col Zulfiqar. You know, I honestly served the army for 22 years. I was the CEO of Rab-7. Unfortunately, an incident occurred and a case was filed. It is a normal process. It can happen to any one."

The former army men also said that he want to face the case legally.

He also blamed media for his present condition saying, "Perhaps I am in this position for the media. Media may be somewhat responsible for it. You see, my punishment started before the proceedings of my trial has begun."

The detained Rab-7 CEO also sought everyone's blessings to overcome the situation.

Abdus Samad who led the raid also said that Zulfiqar remained at his cousin's Moghbazar residence since his removal from the Bangladesh Army.

Shah Alam, officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station, also confirmed the raid and arrest.

According to the case statement, 20 to 30 people, including the Rab men in plain-clothes, entered the shrine at Talsara village of Anwara upazila on November 4 in 2011.

They then kept Pir (religious leader) Ahammed Safa Shah confined to a room on the first floor.

At gun point, they took the keys of cupboards, broke three cupboards open and looted cash Tk 2.07 crore kept in six travel bags.

On March 13, Md Idris, driver of Talsara Darbar Sharif, filed the case following the looting.

The other accused Rab men are Captain Ohidul Hasan, Deputy Assistant Director Abul Bashar, Sub-inspector Tarun Kumar Basu, Assistant Sub-inspectors Ali Ashraf and Jahangir Alam, nayeks Md Hasanuzzaman and Mohammad Liton, constable Suman, soldier Mohammad Jasim.

Didarul Alam and Anwar Miah are the accused Rab informants.

Of the accused, Tarun Kumar, Didarul and Abul Bashar are now behind bars.
