BUET teachers hint strike call-off

Dhaka, May 04 After meeting the prime minister, agitating teachers of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have indicated calling off their strike demanding resignation of the university's vice-chancellor S M Nazrul Islam.

The agitation has brought all activities at BUET to a halt for about a month.

"The prime minister has assured us of resolving our problems. We have full confidence in her," said BUET teachers' association president Prof Mujibur Rahman after coming out of the meeting with the prime minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban on Friday night.

He said that the teachers' association would announce their future course after a meeting on Saturday.

Education secretary Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury told reporters that the prime minister gave them a patient hearing and assured them of solving their problems.

Expressing her concern over the agitation cancelling all academic activities the prime mister requested teachers to return to their classes from Saturday, he added.

"The teachers gave the prime minister their words of resuming the academic activities," said Naser Chowdhury.

All academic activities at BUET came to an abrupt halt after the teachers' association launched agitation on Apr 7 demanding the VC's resignation. They alleged 'anomalies' and 'nepotism' by the VC in appointment and promotion of teachers and employees at the university.

BUET students formed human chain demanding immediate resumption of academic activities after stand-off between the university administration and the teachers' association.

In the face of mounting protest, the BUET syndicate had recently formed a three-member probe body to look into the allegations against the VC.

The university administration also had to postpone the appointment of deputy registrar Kamal Ahammed following teachers' demand.

Against this backdrop, the prime minister invited the agitating teachers to discuss the situation. A delegation of 12 teachers of the teachers' association met the prime minister.

The teachers' association's vice president Maksud Helal, general secretary Ashrafur Rahman, general secretary Golam Zakaria and treasurer Ataur Rahman were included in the teachers' delegation.

Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid, local government and rural development minister Ashraful Islam, food minister Dr Abdur Razzaq and the prime minister's education adviser Dr Moshiur Rahman were also present during the meeting.

Education secretary said steps would be taken based on the outcome of the BUET probe body.

The meeting with the BUET teachers came a day after an identical meeting the prime minister had with the agitating teachers of Jahangirnagar University. She met with both the agitating teachers and the Jahangirnagar University VC Sharif Enamul Kabir on Thursday.

The JU agitating teachers called off their agitation immediately after the meeting with the prime minister. But the agitating students decided to continue fast-unto-death until the VC resigns.

A well-placed government source said that Kabir was about to loose his post.

After the prime minister's meeting with BUET teachers, reporters asked the education secretary whether the JU VC was going to be removed from his position. "The prime minister had talked to the agitating teachers and the JU VC and assured them of resolving the crisis. But removing the VC is a decision has to be made by the president. The president will decide it," said Naser Chowdhury.
