BNP briefing on next action in afternoon

The BNP will hold a press briefing Sunday afternoon to announce a fresh agitation programme to press various demands including tracing out its missing leader M Ilias Ali.

The briefing will start at the party Nayapaltan central office in the city at 5:00pm, said officials of party chairperson's media wing.

In another development, Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee will meet BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office around 4:30pm, the sources said.

BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed on Wednesday during a rally in front of party main office announced that they will enforce tougher movements than hartal.

The BNP-led 18-party alliances have been protesting as its Sylhet Division organising secretary and former lawmaker went missing from the capital on the night of April 17.

It has also been protesting filling of the cases against several top leaders of the alliances in connection with April 29 violence.

Police filed two cases -- one for exploding "bombs" on the secretariat compound and the other for torching a bus near the Prime Minister's Office on the day.

Ilias's car was found abandoned in Banani with all its four doors wide open, giving an impression that he was abducted.

The main opposition claims that the government's law enforcement agencies picked him up. The government, however, refutes the allegation, claiming that it is a drama staged by the BNP.

Protesting his missing, the BNP enforced three consecutive shutdowns from April 22-24 across the country and the BNP-led 18-party alliance enforced two similar lockdowns on April 29-30.
