Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Sunday his country wants to build relations with all political actors in Bangladesh, not with any specific party.
At a meeting with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office in the afternoon, Pranab emphasized on people-to-people connectivity to strengthen the bilateral relationship based on trust.
Echoing the same, Khaleda said discussions have to be continued for this.
BNP Vice-chairman Shamser Mobin Chowdhury, who was present at the meeting, told reporters that the issues of Tipaimukh dam, water sharing of Teesta, border killing and free fair election prominently featured in the 40-minute talks from 4:35pm.
Stressing resolution to unsettled matters through discussions, Khaleda enquired about the development of Teesta river deal.
In reply, Pranab said they are working to build up a national consensus inside India keeping the West Bengal government in the process.
The leader of the opposition in parliament said experts from both countries should conduct a technical survey before signing the Teesta deal.
The former premier said killing on border should be stopped when the Indian minister said that they have asked the authorities concerned to reduce such problem at border, Shamser said at the briefing.
She appreciated the Indian election commission and election process but said it will take time for Bangladesh to reach that level as the democracy here started its journey only few years back.
BNP chairperson’s adviser Reaz Rahman and Sabihuddin Ahmed were also present at the meeting.
