Major transactions involving star wide receivers highlighted the first day of NFL free agency Tuesday, as Marques Colston decided to stay in New Orleans, Brandon Marshall was traded to Chicago and Vincent Jackson signed a five-year, $55.55 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Colston, who said he had never been seeking to move, agreed to a five-year contract to remain in the Big Easy. Shortly afterward, Miami sent its top wideout to the Bears for two third-round draft picks.
The trade for Marshall re-unites the former Bronco with quarterback Jay Cutler. Marshall was extremely productive during three seasons in Denver while Cutler was the Broncos quarterback.
The Bears also signed Jason Campbell to a one-year deal to back up Cutler.
Washington signed receiver Pierre Garcon from the Colts, receiver Josh Morgan from the 49ers and re-signed defensive end Adam Carriker.
Also re-signing with their teams were Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas, Chargers center Nick Hardwick, Vikings backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels, Bears cornerback Tim Jennings, Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis and Seahawks defensive end Red Bryant, who got a $35 million deal over five years with $14.5 million in guarantees.
San Francisco, which had signed enigmatic receiver Randy Moss on Monday, added cornerback Perrish Cox on Tuesday. Neither was in the league last year.
Players released Tuesday include Cardinals tackle Levi Brown (Penn State), Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman, Texans tackle Eric Winston and backup quarterback Matt Leinart, and San Diego tackle Marcus McNeill.
Star defensive end Mario Williams arrived in Buffalo, where he is the Bills' first priority in free agency, and Tennessee coach Mike Munchak met with free-agent guard Steve Hutchinson, a former all-pro in Minnesota.
